This flag is one of the most Weird American Things I can think of
It’s the POW/MIA flag. It’s flown over the White House, alongside the American flag, since the 80s (off and on). As of 2019 it’s mandatory to fly it over federal government buildings; it flies over state government buildings in many places as well. It seems like a neutral sign of military support, so it’s easy to pass over it without asking “wait, are there any American POWs”
Then if you look it up it’s the symbol of a Vietnam-era conspiracy theory debunked in 1993. This is the flag for the 70s/80s version of Pizzagate, and it flies over the US Capitol building and White House every single day
This was a legit thing when it was created; it was created during the Vietnam War, by the families of POWs (this flag is not really for all POWs or MIA soldiers, it’s specifically for Vietnam War ones)
But after the American POWs were released, they kept pushing the idea there were still American prisoners there, despite a lack of any evidence. “MIA” is on the flag bc they believe that MIA soldiers are really POWs. They were hugely influential during the 1980s, while Reagan was in office.
It was debunked by a Congressional hearing lead by John McCain and John Kerry in 1993, and by now they’ve proven nearly all MIA soldiers to be deceased, but they didn’t stop, and now this flag flies every day outside the building where it was proven false, by mandate of the body that once debunked it
It was, this theory was everywhere in pop culture. It also forms the plot of Chuck Norris’ Missing in Action and several other 80s action movies. The X-Files, among many other shows, did a episode based on it, and the Armin Tamzarian plot on The Simpsons is parodying it.
This theory was huge, I forgot I hadn’t mentioned it in this post but belief that there were still American prisoners in Vietnam was a major part of why the US didn’t have relations with Vietnam until 1995, and it’s the embargo was only lifted because of the hearing in 1993 proving they didn’t.
Because this is definitely something he would do! He would probably make it for Peter. Also, is that cheese?
i first thought it was butter fsr lmao ace would be on his knees begging peter to eat it, crying and all but peter keeps denying then gene comes in to save peter’s life by agreeing to eat it for him (because there’s no doubt in mind he wouldn’t) and luckily ace couldn’t hear them discussing the plan over his own sobbing ace then looks up and notices it gone, peter then shyly exclaiming “yeah it… actually was really good, i’m sorry ace” and ace is sO HAPPY he gets up to hug peter and peter hugs back, feeling bad for lying to his sweet spaceman but it was kind of worth it at least gene got his midnight snack bc it’s literally 2 in the morning
